If you have never played a mud before, the amount of information can be overwhelming. Once you get to know the basic commands your mud life will get easier and before you know it you will be running around from zone to zone. Nowadays, with massive multiplayer graphical games being as popular as they are, people tend to be put off by the all text that a mud contains. On the other hand this text allows you to use your imagination and the whole thing starts to feel like you are alive within your own novel. It is an experience unlike any other. On the Information tab you will find some commands which are often used on AstroMUD. Be sure to check this out if you are not familiar yet with mudding.

You can try AstroMUD out via the direct telnet link on this site under the Play now! link in the main menu. The best thing to do is to download one of the mud-clients and enter AstroMUD server details to get busy on AstroMUD. The server details can be found on the download page. A mud-client offers a handy interface. It allows you, for instance, to set up triggers and actions to execute certain standard actions on the MUD. If you don't want to create food and water manually all the time for you character the client will do this automatically for you. Very useful and it will improve your MUD skills a lot.  When you are killing high level monsters, good triggers are a must to survive and keep your own death-spam to a minimum.

When you first log onto AstroMUD there are some useful entries to help you filter out the information stream that overwhelms you. Helpful people will point you towards the various helpfiles that AstroMUD has. One of the most important is “help newbie” – this document contains all the basic information you need for playing on a MUD. Our newbie zone is also outfitted with various signs. When walking around in the Tower of Training, various signs will give you useful information about things you encounter in those rooms. Of course, you’ve logged on to a multi-player game, so never hesitate to ask any of the other players for help. This can be done by using the “newbie channel” – a communications channel for all your starter questions.

In addition, there are some commands that can be overwhelming, but quite useful, “COMMAND” for instance, shows you all the commands on Astromud at your disposal. Read them and just try them out. The command “SOCIAL” gives you all the social interaction “emotes”  you can perform. This list is enormous and quite fun!
Finally, to make your mudding experience a bit easier, we have added some automatic features. By typing “TOGGLE” you can find out what can be automated, and what features you want to use. “Autoexit” is a useful one, as it immediately shows you available exits when walking in to a room. “Autoloot corpse” is also useful when you’re killing something solo. All in all, AstroMUD is quite an experience, just take your time and enjoy yourself! Come escape Reality!
